Report from German Open 2016

The 7th Edition of the WFGA German Open was once again held in Dirmstein’s Soccerpark Pfalz from September 9th – September 11th. 71 Males and 17 Females took the opportunity to compete against each other in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Events.

The tournament started on Friday with the Mixed Doubles Event. Sandra Mayer & Hans-Peter Baudy from Germany proved to be a well oiled machine once again and took the win with 60 kicks (-12). Anette Sahlin (SWE) & Gerhard Godescha (AUT) seemed to „click“ right away and managed to take 2nd place in surprising fashion after playing together for the very first time with 63 kicks (-9). The podium was completed by 2 of WFGA’s most decorated players in Pernilla Nordgren (SWE) and Alex Kober (GER) with 64 kicks (-8). While only finishing in 4th place with his swedish partner, Caisa Edvinges, the „Danish Wizard“ Anders Bollerup took the most talked about kick of the weekend Instead of playing it save, he overcame the U-Turn obstacle on Hole 9 by hitting the wall of a nearby house. Unbelievable! As far as I know somebody took a video of it, so make sure you check that out.

After an exciting Comeback in Round 2, the Team of Marina Wolff & Maja Kober from Germany took the win in the Women’s Doubles competition with a total of 129 kicks (-6). They managed to overcome an 8 kicks deficit from Round 1 to put 2 of WFGA’s finest Women’s Teams behind them. The swedish combination of Pernilla Nordgren & Caisa Edvinges secured 2nd place with a 3-Hole Playoff win against Half Time Leaders Corinna Dörrsam & Lisa Grewing from Germany.

The Men’s Doubles marked the only competition that wasn’t won by a German player. Simon Secher Jensen and 2-time WFGA World Champion, Martin Schmücker, from Denmark claimed 1st place with a total of 111 kicks (-24). Just like in the Women’s Doubles competition, 2nd and 3rd place were decided in a thrilling Playoff. Reigning Men’s Doubles World Champions, Stefan Moritz & Sven Janson, kept their cool and secured the victory against Markus Thurlin (SWE) & Anders Bollerup (DEN).

Everybody knew it would take an outstanding performance of any player to beat WFGA’s newly crowned Women’s World Champion, Sandra Mayer, on her home turf. Only 3 weeks after the biggest success of her career, Sandra delivered once again on the Big Stage. With an incredible total score of -18 after 4 Rounds she was 12 kicks in front of 3rd place, but it wasn’t enough to leave Maja Kober behind. With only 14 years of age, Maja once again proved to be a Top Player already. After finishing 2nd in the World Championships, she managed to beat Sandra by 3 kicks this time with a total score of -21 after 4 Rounds. Another competition, another Playof. After a disappointing 2nd Round performance (+12), Laura Rolli (GER) fought her way back into the Top 3. By beating Pernilla Nordgren (SWE) in the Playoff she didn’t only secure her own spot on the podium but made it a purely German podium as well.

Marinus Stadler is on fire! After dominating a couple of smaller local tournaments he continued to shine with another impressive performance. The bavarian native took the win with a total score of - 54 and also set a new record on Course B in Round 3 with only 42 kicks (-21). Even Germany’s „Living Legend“ and Course Owner, Alex Kober, couldn’t stop Marinus this time but finished 2nd with a fantastic total score of -49 after 4 Rounds. Another purely German podium was completed by Stadler’s Double Partner, Hans Niedermeier, who finished with a total score of -47. Youngster Tim Becker could’ve also been on the podium, but he missed a crucial kick on Hole 18 while fighting for 2nd place and ended up finishing 4th. Unlucky, but the future looks bright for Tim who played an awesome tournament.

Congratulations to all the Winners and a big „Thank you!“ to everybody in Dirmstein who helped make this another exciting and well organised WFGA Tournament. Your hospitality was highly appreciated.

See you in Spain!
